Case Study

National Grid

Milford Haven

£1 billion (capex)

This £1bn project involved the construction of a 300km pipeline from West Wales to Gloucestershire which is capable of carrying a fifth of the natural gas required by the UK. PROjEN provided full project services on two of the pipeline’s major sections in South Wales – Milford Haven to Aberdulais (120km) and Felindre to Brecon (80km).

The Project Scope

During the course of this project, PROjEN provided design co-ordinators, project managers, project supervisors, construction managers, construction engineers, quantity surveyors, land agents, ALO’s, document controllers, health & safety managers, environmental managers and archaeologists.

PROjEN have extensive and specific knowledge relating to the design and construction management of Above Ground Installations (AGI’s). We were responsible for the management of the National Grid AGI’s within South Hook LNG (named Herbrandston) and Dragon LNG (named Newton Noyes).

The scheme also included an AGI at Derwen Fawr with an intermediate block valve at Llangynog. As part of this project, there is new filtration, metering, heating, pressure and volumetric control required at Derwen Fawr to control the gas pressure and flow rate into the existing 2 No. Feeder pipeline.

The Challenges

We applied Design, Safety and Engineering principles to the construction of all AGI’s whilst meeting the client requirements in terms of specification, budget and timescales. This was a particular challenge as the time constraints were extremely tight, exacerbated by the associated planning issues that placed a significant challenge on the team to ensure that planning approval was granted without undue delay.

This was a highly complicated, multi-discipline, major infrastructure project with a potential for delay caused through design change through the requirements imposed by the planning authorities. The project involved multiple parties who formed strong working relationships to ensure the project proceeded to plan.

National Grid

PROjEN gave the client the ability to call upon a very wide range of engineering and project support services from one organisation.

This was an exciting project involving a wide variety of businesses who were required to work closely together to achieve a common goal.
