Westcott Park

AD Plant Design

£11 million

Shanks works closely with public and private sector customers to increase recycling and reduce the waste sent to landfill sites. PROjEN provided a wide range of consultancy services and engineering support design to assist with the design and build of their iconic Westcott Park Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant.

The Project Scope

This project was one of the first in the UK to benefit from PROjEN’s unique approach to the design and implementation of Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plants. PROjEN were chosen by Shanks Waste Solutions as Client Engineer following a competitive tendering process involving around 15 engineering consultants and technology providers. We were chosen by the client sue to our project delivery experience and our almost uniquely high level of experience in the design, build and commissioning of Process facilities and Anaerobic Digestion Plants.

The brief from the client was to design a highly efficient and flexible AD plant capable of accepting and processing a wide variety of packaged supermarket waste (the composition of which varies across the year). The facility was constructed on a Greenfield site and PROjEN worked hand in hand with Shanks to take the design from a blank piece of paper to full electrical generation in record time.

The Challenge

This project utilised a wide cross section of our service offering which included: feasibility and optioneering, design development and detailed design, legislative compliance (including, DSEAR/ATEX, functional safety & PAS 110), equipment specification and procurement services, project management, cost control, construction and commissioning support, all of which added up to give the client a flexible and well-designed facility that fully complied with all legislative requirements. Furthermore, this plant was one of the first in the UK to be designed and delivered in line with Health and Safety standards normally found on a Chemical processing plant, which included full Hazid and Hazop, Area Classification and constructability reviews.

PROjEN’s award winning project and construction management experience, together with their close relationships with specialist suppliers and Biogas technical experts resulted in the delivery of an iconic project in the UK AD sector.

  • Shanks benefited from PROjEN’s Technology Agnostic approach, ensuring that the best fit solution was chosen.
  • PROjEN’s cross sector experience ensured that the most efficient method of project delivery was applied, in addition to exploring alternative process/technological solutions.

This project represented PROjEN’s first Anaerobic Digestion Plant of this size to be delivered in the UK and was pivitol in providing the foundation tfor our design and build of a number of highly successful AD plants in the intervening years.
