PROjEN has been nominated for the ECI ACTIVE project award
PM PROjEN, the award winning Project Management Company based in Northwich, Cheshire, has just been nominated for the ECI ACTIVE project of the year 2008 award by Greenergy Biofuels Ltd.
In a letter submitted to the European Construction Institute (ECI) on the 28th February 2008, Greenergy stated that they were pleased to nominate PROjEN for the award for their work at the Greenergy bio-diesel plant at Immingham in Lincolnshire. Greenergy felt that PROjEN’s overall performance in managing the complex £15 million project had been matched by their ability to utilise the ACTIVE principles to manage the sensitivity involved in changing project teams whilst still keeping the project on budget and programme. The project had been a major success for all involved and Greenergy believes that PROjEN are fully deserving of the nomination.
The European Construction Institute (ECI) is a forum for some of the largest contractors and project support organisations in Europe and holds awards each year to give recognition to specifically significant projects and studies carried out by members of the ECI. The ECI ACTIVE project of the year award is presented to the company which best applies ECI and ACTIVE and Value Enhancing Principles to the project in order to achieve outstanding performance during the past year. PROjEN have been previous winners of ACTIVE awards in 2003, 2004 and 2006 when they were awarded Contractor of the Year for 2003 and Project of the Year for 2004 and 2006. This year’s award ceremony will be held in Venice.
Greenergy is the fastest growing independent oil company and leading bio-fuels supplier in the UK and in 2005 began construction on a 100,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) bio-diesel plant at Immingham. At the end of 2006, Greenergy decided to build a second and equal sized plant alongside the original – thereby doubling capacity to 200,000 tpa. The original plant was approaching completion at the beginning of 2007 but problems encountered during construction convinced Greenergy to appoint a different team to design and build the new phase 2 facility. This second phase of the project was awarded to PROjEN in February 2007 with the instruction to specify, design, procure and site manage the entire construction and also assist in the commissioning of the ancillaries element with completion by April 2008 and to assist the Italian design team of Desmet Ballestra Oleo in the construction management of their bio-diesel plant equipment installation.
PROjEN brought a more professional approach to the management of the project, ensuring adequate resources were in place, along with project control systems for planning, cost control, scope control and risk management. Management systems were introduced and followed to improve the site performance which resulted in a remarkable step change in the attitude to site health and safety. Communication and document control systems and processes were followed and performance measurement was undertaken by regular reviews and independent quality audits. The team at PROjEN also suggested novel and innovative techniques to assist the installation process.
John Taylor, Managing Director at PROjEN said, “We are extremely pleased to have been nominated once again for an ECI ACTIVE award and I am particular proud that the nomination has come from Greenergy. There were a number of issues faced by the project team but the comments from Greenergy show how well they rose to the challenge. I believe the team at PROjEN did a fantastic job in making the transfer of responsibilities as seamless as possible and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their hard work”
