PROjEN wins the ECI project of the year 2008 award

PM PROjEN, the specialist Project Management Company has won the ECI Project of the Year award for 2008 after being nominated by Greenergy Biofuels Ltd, the fastest growing independent oil company and leading biofuels supplier in the UK. PROjEN, specialists in the design and implementation of project managed services, received the award on the 17th April 2008 at the ECI award ceremony held in Venice.

The European Construction Institute (ECI) is a forum for some of the largest contractors and project support organisations in Europe and hosts award ceremonies each year to give recognition to the projects and studies carried out by leading member organisations of the ECI.

The complex £15 million “award winning” project saw the construction of a new world class 100,000 tonnes per annum biodiesel processing plant alongside a partly finished and equal sized facility at Immingham in North Lincolnshire. PROjEN’s role was to specify, design, procure and “site manage” the entire construction of the new plant and also assist in its commissioning.

Problems encountered on the initial phase build had lead Greenergy to source a different team to build phase 2. PROjEN’s more professional approach was evident in ensuring adequate resources were in place along with project control systems for planning, cost control, scope control and risk management. Dramatic improvements in attitude to site health and safety, improved communications, performance measurement and team spirit soon prompted Greenergy to invite PROjEN to complete the works on the original plant.

Greenergy and PROjEN have since developed close working links and Greenergy nominated PROjEN for their work at the plant due to their ability to utilise the ACTIVE principles to manage the sensitivity involved in changing project teams whilst still keeping the project on budget and programme.

Steve McCaffrey, head of production & infrastructure, Greenergy said, “Without doubt the finished project is a success, acclaimed by ourselves, the operations & maintenance contractor, the designers, the CDM co-ordinator plus an external audit from SGS. It was achieved under budget and within programme”. Steve continues “Given that this was a fast track project on a new site, utilising a significant number of contractors in conjunction with a designer who had little knowledge of prevailing UK working practices, this is a commendable achievement and all concerned should take credit for their contribution”

The ECI project of the year award is presented to the company which has achieved outstanding project performance through successful application of the ECI ACTIVE value enhancing principles. John Taylor, managing director, PROjEN said, “This is a great achievement for PROjEN. The project undertaken was challenging yet we are more than happy with the overall result. It is great to receive recognition for the work we have carried out and especially when that recognition comes from one of the leading names in the oil industry and we look forward to working with Greenergy on further projects in the future”.

This is fourth ECI award won by PROjEN following earlier successes in 2003, 2004 and 2006. Other awards won recently include the Vale Royal Business of the Year Award in 2006, the High Sheriff of Cheshire Award for Enterprise in 2007 and the RoSPA Gold Award for 2008 – the 7th successive award made in recognition of the company’s health & safety performance.
